So here I am in what is approximately my 5th month of coaching roller derby. Time does speed by. At this time last year I was getting on quads at Laurel Skate Center for the 1st time in about 25 years. That’s older than some of our SMRD ladies sadly. J Anyways, so about 1 year later I am now coaching an amazing group of women in hopes of preparing them to compete in an amazing sport. I’ve gone from not knowing the 1st thing about derby to teaching it, watching it, becoming addicted to it, missing it, sleeping, eating and drinking it and of course, DERBY LOVING it!!… Such a privilege and a blessing!
I have to say that I have grown so much as a man being around these true athletes not to mention to meeting some of the most incredible human beings I’ve met during my time on this earth. If someone asked me today what is the best thing about derby I’d say ….family. From league to league, competing or not, if you are down with derby….you are family. I’ve coached a few other sports and from the bottom of my heart, there is nothing like roller derby.
That’s all for now….figured this was a nice way to open up the ICE box…..
