SMRD Members and Friends are supporting the 2016 Warrior Dash in Mechanicsville, MD! We’ll be volunteering around the event, so stop and say hi if you see us!
Warrior Dash is the obstacle course race that anyone can start and everyone can finish. With over two and a half million participants worldwide since 2009, we’ve reinvented the concept of a 5k run and created a revolution: Warrior Nation. Whether you’re an elite athlete or just beginning the challenge, you’ll conquer 12 world-class obstacles like Goliath and Fisherman’s Catch, wade across wooded lakes, and venture through mud-caked backroads as you make your loop to the finish line. You’ll be rewarded with a finisher medal (that doubles as a wall-mountable bottle opener), a sweet t-shirt, fuzzy Warrior helmet, and ice cold beer. Head to the post-race party to relive the course with friends, dance to music, and celebrate your decision to leave your normal weekend in the mud.

Southern Maryland Roller Derby Joins Women’s Flat Track Derby Association
AUSTIN, TEXAS – The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) is proud to announce today that Southern Maryland Roller Derby has been accepted as a full member of the WFTDA, the international governing body for the sport of women’s flat track roller derby and a member organization for leagues to collaborate and network.
As a new member of the WFTDA, Southern Maryland Roller Derby joins the ranks of 355 all-female, skater-owned-and-operated leagues worldwide that have united to lead the sport of women’s flat track roller derby. After successfully completing the WFTDA Apprentice Program, they can now enjoy the benefits of full WFTDA membership, including the ability to compete in sanctioned games that qualify for WFTDA ranking. Southern Maryland Roller Derby will begin their WFTDA membership a Class C member.
Southern Maryland Roller Derby, Inc. (SMRD), was officially formed January 2012 but was originally conceptualized April 2011. At that time, the closest league was in Washington, D.C. Southern Maryland was severely lacking derby! The initial online recruitment query was posted in June 2011. From those that responded, a core group of founders went on to develop the non-profit business structure and democratic policies we operate by. We are a 501(c)(3) organization. No one gets paid here. In fact, we pay to play. Practice is held several times per week and regular attendance is required to make sure you are safe to skate and have the skills to play. The individuals that have set out to form the first women’s roller derby league in southern Maryland know how positively this sport has affected our lives. It takes a team to work together both on and off the track. Each person is helping the league succeed by performing tasks and duties. Our goal is to bring the same camaraderie, joy and love of the game to other women while being role models to youth and giving back to the community.
About the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association
Founded in 2005, the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association is the international governing body for the sport of women’s roller derby and a membership organization for leagues to collaborate and network. The WFTDA sets standards for rules, seasons and safety, and determines guidelines for the national and international athletic competitions of member leagues. There are currently 302 WFTDA member leagues and 71 leagues in the WFTDA Apprentice program globally. The WFTDA a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization is governed by a five-member, volunteer Board of Directors.

Our great friends over at Operation Maelstrom – also our excellent announcers at our home games – has their latest episode of Greetings from Derbyland up for all to see. This episode features our recent game with NOVA. Go check the video out and why not subscribe to their channel to0.
Today was unlike most Sundays for some people throughout Southern Maryland. For many, it was a day of watching sports or other activities that come with the seasonal tide. However, there were no sports today that can compare to the heart and fervor that happened at Capital Clubhouse between Southern Maryland Roller Derby and NOVA Roller Derby; both teams competed on a level that rivals the championship series. The lead throughout the game changed hands back and forth making it an exciting game for the skaters and the crowd. In the end NOVA was able to eek out a win with everything coming down to the last jam.
Congratulations, SMRD, on a great final game in 2015. You deserve every minute of praise.
One of our favorite events that we do periodically is teaching and skating with local Girl Scouts. This night was no exception and we had a wonderful time rolling with these adorable and energetic young girls and maybe – hopefully – future Derby skaters!
