Season’s Beatings

Season’s Beatings

Season’s Beatings in an annual roller derby event hosted by the River City Roller Girls in Richmond, VA. This will be the third year in a row that Southern Maryland Roller Derby will be attending the event with both skaters and league volunteers. Season’s Beatings is a one day event in which all skaters are randomly rostered and scrimmage against each other; each scrimmage is 30 minutes long and  broken down into 2 minute jams. We here at SMRD are super excited to get on the track to play against other amazing derby girls and also practice everything we have been learning since our last bout! We hope to see you there!

Eat, Ink and Be Merry

Eat, Ink and Be Merry

Southern Maryland Roller Derby is holding a tattoo fundraiser!  There will be six designs available on a first-come-first-serve basis.  Two designs are $20, two are $40 and two are $60!  And as if these amazing original designs aren’t enough, there will be skaters to talk to about the amazing and growing sport of roller derby and we will be selling Southern Maryland Roller Derby swag. During the lunch hours into dinnertime, two food trucks will be selling their wares in the tattoo shop parking lot.  We are proud to welcome Melted and SweetArt to Southern Maryland for the first time!  We are raising money to fund our second bouting season, including at least three home games that will be played locally.

The End of SMRD’s First Season

Did you know that roller derby season is coming to an end? It is true and a very sad for all of us roller derby enthusiasts. As the season is coming to a close, Southern Maryland Roller Derby played in one last bout this past Sunday against the Salisbury WikomIkazis. It was a wonderful ending to the very first bout season ever played by Southern Maryland Roller Derby.

The Salisbury Wikomikazis is a formidable team, only a year older than SMRD, with wonderful spirit and some amazing players. The game was hosted by the Wikomikazis and played on their home track in Salisbury, MD. The track was new to some of us SMRDers (a wood court), and it definitely took some adjusting to.

Personally, one of the most exciting things was not only was this the last bout of the season for us but for Bunny Blaze, Carbomb Kelly and myself (JuiceBox), we all played for the first time with the team. Bunny Blaze, Carbomb Kelly and myself all graduated from the same bootcamp, spring of 2014, and were BEYOND excited to be playing with the team!

We fought hard against the Wikomikazis, gave it our all and came out learning a few new things. We hope to be able to take this last bout into the off season with us and really amp up our training for the next bouting season to start next spring. This off season we will not only be doing our usual training, but we hope to mix in some cross training in the gym to add a new dynamic and really jump start us for next season.

This year we finished our first bouting season, completed two bootcamps, and got our 501c3 (nonprofit). We did so much! We have big hopes for next year and hope you’ll join us for the ride

P.S. A big thanks to Jason Walter, who shot these amazing images!

Tattoos for Tuition

Tattoos for Tuition

Southern Maryland Roller Derby is proud to partner with Chronic Ink Tattoo and the Autism Spectrum Support Group of Southern Maryland for Tattoos for Tuition!

The proceeds from this event will help Southern Maryland children on the autism spectrum attend therapuetic summer camps. These camps are not covered by insurance and can cost as much as $300 a week, but they are an enriching and fun social experience for the children lucky enough to attend. We want to make that happen for more SOMD kids and we need your help!

There are three set tattoo designs for this 20-40-60 fundraiser. One will cost $20. One will cost $40. One will cost $60. There is no deviation on the design and only minor deviation in color. The placement is up to you! We will also have temporary tattoos with the same designs and one with our logo available with a donation, for those not quite ready to go under the needle! And, if you don’t want a real or temporary tattoo, you can always make you way to the shop anyway for some sweet Southern Maryland Roller Derby merch (t-shirts, stickers and more!)

Please join us for this worthy cause and fun event! Come on down, get some ink, meet some roller derby girls and support this amazing cause!
