A Little Background On Us
Southern Maryland Roller Derby, Inc. (SMRD) is a women’s flat track roller derby league that trains to create amateur national competitive roller derby teams. SMRD provides a safe and supportive environment for a diversity of people that fosters acceptance, respect, camaraderie, self esteem, athleticism, and good sports(wo)manship. As roller derby athletes and ambassadors, SMRD members are encouraging role models and gladly support our community and other non-profit entities through charitable contributions
We train hard. We work hard. We play hard. We love even harder.
We love women’s flat track roller derby and we know how it has changed our lives in a positive way. We wish to bring that opportunity to southern Maryland. We are looking for individuals that would like to help make this opportunity a reality.
We operate under a non-profit business structure and are actively pursuing a 501(c)(3) status. No one gets paid here. In fact, we pay to play. Practice is held several times per week and regular attendance is required to make sure you are safe to skate and have the skills to play.
- It takes a team to work together both on and off the track. To keep SMRD rolling, each person is helping the league succeed by performing tasks and duties within committees. Every little bit helps, like balls in a bearing.
Southern Maryland Roller Derby, Inc. (SMRD), was officially formed January 2012 but was originally conceptualized April 2011. At that time, the closest league was in Washington, D.C. Southern Maryland was severely lacking derby! The initial online recruitment query was posted in June 2011. From those that responded, a core group of founders went on to develop the non-profit business structure and democratic policies we operate by. We are a 501(c)(3) organization. No one gets paid here. In fact, we pay to play. Practice is held several times per week and regular attendance is required to make sure you are safe to skate and have the skills to play. The individuals that have set out to form the first women’s roller derby league in southern Maryland know how positively this sport has affected our lives. It takes a team to work together both on and off the track. Each person is helping the league succeed by performing tasks and duties. Our goal is to bring the same camaraderie, joy and love of the game to other women while being role models to youth and giving back to the community.
We are committed to support the community that supports us. This is done through community involvement, fundraising, donations, and volunteering for charities and non-profit organizations.
